Teenage sensation Joshua Tarling is the new overall leader of the 2023 Renewi Tour after a dominant victory in the stage 2 individual time-trial, taking just his second professional victory following the British national time-trial championships.
“I’m so happy, I think we did super good in the team, I’ve been super supported with it and I’m super happy," the 19-year-old Welshman said delightedly in a post-race interview with the INEOS Grenadiers official website. "I thought I started fast, and then I heard their splits and I started panicking so I just tried to get everything out that I could, and I think it worked well with the wind.”
Completing the course in 15:05, Tarling was 14 seconds clear of his nearest challenger and now leads the general classification by the same amount, ahead of UAE Team Emirates' Tim Wellens. So with harder days to come, can Tarling prove himself as a GC rider?
“I’ll always see how well I can go on GC, but we have other super talents in the team, so we have options - everyone can win this race, we have a super strong team so we’ll see what happens,” concludes the INEOS Grenadiers starlet.
