Rumored cycling 'Super League' to be funded by Saudi Arabia's PIF, famous for their investment in Golf and Newcastle United

Whilst the bombshell news that five of cycling's top teams, including the INEOS Grenadiers and Jumbo-Visma were looking to form a 'Super League' shocked some, many have realised for a while change is needed. The question though, was who could finance such a breakaway?

Now, according to Radio Cycling at least, it seems we have the answer. Sources have revealed to the outlet that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) will be the backers. The controversial group have famously been heavily involved in the sport of Golf over the last few years and own Newcastle United Football Club but have been criticised by some as a tool of sports-washing used by the Saudi Arabian government.

"RadioCycling understands that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is part of the proposed new league that promises to revolutionise and change cycling forever," they reveal on their official X ( Twitter) account. "PIF, who have invested heavily in football, golf, boxing and F1, have had discussions with the major stakeholders of the mooted league."

"RadioCycling has been informed that the league has been in the works for the past three years, and that six major teams are involved."

How this all will work out or if it will ever come to fruition remains to be seen but it's almost certain this is a story that will dominate the sport of cycling in the coming years.
