On September 25, David Lappartient will be re-elected as president of the UCI until 2029. At the congress to be held in Kigali, Rwanda, the current 'boss' of the sport will remain in office, and for a rather surprising reason in particular.
Lappartient will not need to compete to remain president of the UCI, a position he has held since he was first elected in 2017. The 52-year-old Frenchman will serve his third term due to the fact that there are no other candidates!
David Lappartient was the only one to present himself in time for the election. No one else did so within the statutory time limit, which ended on June 25. Thus, his presidency will be extended to 12 years.
"Regarding the election of the next presidency, only David Lappartient, current UCI president, presented a candidacy for the position. In accordance with article 40, paragraph 3 of the UCI Constitution, his election for a third four-year term will be confirmed without a vote," the official communiqué published by cycling's governing body read.
