Pre-race favourite Johannes Staune-Mittet forced to abandon the Tour de l'Avenir

Runner-up last year and pre-race favourite this time around, Johannes Staune-Mittet has sadly been forced to abandon the 2023 Tour de l'Avenir on its opening day of racing.

The 21-year-old, Jumbo-Visma rider who was representing Norway had been the victim of a bad crash partway through stage 1 and his team's official X account has now confirmed the sad news. "Unfortunately, Johannes had to abandon the Tour de l'Avenir with some wounds after a massive crash in the first stage," the announcement reads. "We wish him a speedy recovery."

The stage was eventually won in a thrilling finale by Denmark's Anders Foldager as the breakaway narrowly held on to reach the line ahead of the peloton.

With Staune-Mittet now out of the race though, a massive opportunity presents itself to the remainder of the general classification challengers and over the coming days we will find out who will be able to best take advantage.
