Most will recognize the name of Pim Ronhaar mainly from muddy cyclocross routes, but the 21-year old Dutchman is keen to show there's much more in him as he crawls to overall victory in recent Flèche du Sud (2.2). And he is looking for more as he explains in an interview for CyclingOnline.
"Last road season I was already able to show great things without specifically preparing for it," said Ronhaar. "That is why I left for Mallorca soon after the winter campaign this year to prepare for my road goals there. My basic level is much higher because of this and the form immediately turns out to be such that I can win."
Next up on Ronhaar's programme is Baloise Belgium Tour. "I hope to sharpen the form. Normally a crosser sees the road season as preparation for winter, but I now want to make the best of it in this discipline. I hope to be a good road rider in the future, let's hope I can move up a level in a few years."
One level higher, that means becoming a road pro. "My teammate Thibau Nys is an example in that regard, he combines cyclocross with our team with a road contract with Trek-Segafredo. That would be an ultimate dream for me too. But anyway, a strong road season is always good towards the next cyclocross winter. Because that is also a goal."
