It takes some getting used to for Oliver Naesen. He will have to continue without his mentor Greg Van Avermaet from next year. The 2016 Olympic champion announced the end of his career yesterday.

"I didn't know it for very long either", Oliver Naesen responds to his farewell to his teammate and training buddy Greg Van Avermaet in a short interview for Sporza. "I knew he was going to tie the knot after the classics."

"Greg wasn't down after the spring," Naesen continues. "He's not like that. Greg won't be in a euphoric mood after a win neither." The two are training partners from several years back in Flanders and the friendship is what led to the partnership in the French team.

"Greg remains the rider who adds another climb at the end. He is always there. And he broke a few. Me too," he laughs. Still, Naesen will miss him. "Sure. I'm going to have to train alone more often."
