The women's Elite Road Race at the World Championships promised drama and it delivered, with Annemiek van Vleuten riding to a surprise solo win as she attacked inside the final kilometer. However, in the bottom of the group was Niamh Fisher-Black, who rode into the World Title in the under-23 classification.
The Kiwi rider was present in the front as the race was attacked over the final two laps, and was the only rider racing the under-23 event to go over the climbs in the front. This allowed her to, despite finishing last in the group in 12th place, conquer the under-23 world championships.
