Kris Vancoillie is a name unknown within cycling but most cycling fans have seen him last week in highlight on the cobbled classics. The Belgian fan was one of the spectators who was hit by a motorbike at the Oude Kwaremont during last week's E3 Saxo Classic, and he's shared his side of the story in a recent interview.
“My shoulder was dislocated and broken in two places, I had a bruised rib and my eye socket was completely swollen,” Vancoillie told Het Nieuwsblad. “In itself I don't blame the motorcyclist, but in hindsight he did of course commit a hit and run. We had to track him down using CCTV footage to get the insurance papers in order.”
The motorbike that hit Vancoillie was riding up the Oude Kwaremont in front of Mathieu van der Poel, Tadej Pogacar and Wout van Aert. Quick to react, the photographer who fell moved out of the road, without affecting the race. However the images of the motorbike sliding out and taking down several fans was dramatic.
The race organizers have also revealed that they're in contact with the fan and working on avoiding more incidents such as this one. "Later this week we will have a meeting with Mr. Vancoillie and we will try to avoid such incidents in the future."
