Team BikeExchange - Jayco have renewed with Simon Yates just days ago and now they announce that they are, despite the struggle to stay at World Tour level, keeping another of it's leaders for several years as
Michael Matthews had his contract renewed.
In a press release, the Australian said: "I have known Gerry since I was 17 years old and he always backed me 110% during my career, and I am of course always ready to give my best to repay his and the team’s trust in me. We always want to achieve new goals, make sure we build a better team year after year, and I can’t wait to achieve more success that we deserve.”
The 31-year old has been a crucial part of the Australian team in all years he's raced for it, and being one of the country's main figures it is of great value for the team to keep him on board for what is a long-term contract that had been in the making for the last few weeks. Besides the sprinter role he's gotten used to, over the years Matthews transformed into more of a puncheur and classics specialist.
"Team BikeExchange-Jayco is evolving, getting stronger and stronger every year, and I can’t wait to carry on the success we are having at the moment," he said. Although struggling to get wins since his return to BikeExchange, he kept his consistency and was rewarded with an astounding
win atop Mende during this Tour.
"This team for me is really a family, I am now 31 and obviously in the prime of my career with the best legs I have ever had since I started racing and I want to show the world, the team and Gerry what I am made of," he said motivated.
