Heartbreaking finish on stage 4 of #LaVuelta23 Marijn went for it. Beautiful teamwork to set Marijn up for the sprint finish but he went down in a crash with a few hundred meters to the line. Tomorrow’s another day.
Marijn van den Berg has had a great run-up to the Vuelta a Espana and won a stage at the Tour de Pologne which included plenty climbs. Hence, the Dutchman was excited for yesteday's punchy finish of stage 4, but crashed when leading the peloton.
"I felt really good. I am super disappointed. The wounds are not too bad. Hopefully I can recover a bit and then I'll go for it again," van den Berg wrote in his social media after the finale of stage 3. He didn't suffer significant injuries.
With a modest sprint field, the EF Education-EasyPost rider found himself as one of the main favourites for the win. Knowing the technical and explosive nature of the sprint in Tarragona, he took big risks and hit the front into the final corner.
He took heavy risks and payed for it, entering the tight corner with too much speed, he crashes as it was visible his overuse of the brakes in the corner. The stage win ended up being taken by Kaden Groves, whilst the 24-year old was only 143rd across the line. Today's stage 5 however will be another opportunity, on a day that also features a few ascents.
