Maikel Zijlaard, the 25-year-old cyclist from Rotterdam, is making waves with Tudor Pro Cycling Team. Known for his role as a lead-out specialist, Zijlaard secured his first professional road win earlier this year in April 2024, triumphing in the prologue of the Tour de Romandie. This victory marked a significant milestone in his career, highlighting his growing strength in both lead-outs and prologues.
"I have discovered what suits me," Zijlaard shared with Wielerflits. "Those are the two things I have focused on the most: my place in the lead-out, and the prologue."
Zijlaard’s approach to the lead-out role has been one of precision and strength. "The lead-out is about strength, so I did a bit of gym and did some specific training. And that also makes you stronger in prologues. I also said that I want to get better at that. Saying it was also a step in the process, so we worked on that. We got everything out of it, so hopefully it will be even better next year."
Team manager Fabian Cancellara, regarded as one of the greatest time trial riders ever, has played a key role in motivating the young Dutchman. "At important matches, he always sends something or calls you to cheer you up, but in the end, he doesn’t want to take me out of focus. It’s more that I have contact with my coach Kurt Bergin-Taylor and the people who are there."
Zijlaard’s commitment to his craft is clear, and his recent success has only fueled his passion for the sport. "I have to say that I like it so much that I wouldn’t want to do anything else anytime soon."
As he continues to refine his skills, Zijlaard is poised for even greater achievements in the future.
