Magnus Cort Nielsen is no stranger to a breakaway, however it was nevertheless a surprise to see the Danish sprinter attack first on the day instead of waiting for the bunch sprint where he could finish among the best.
With EF Education-EasyPost chasing stage wins in the race, it seems as if their strategy of getting the visibility has started from the first road stage already as Magnus Cort Nielsen was sent to the front with the clear goal of riding into the podium at the end of the day. The Dane teamed up with Sven Erik Bystrom, and temporarily with Pierre Rolland and Cyril Barthe aswell in the head of the race.
Making good use of his sprinting and puncheur abilities, he managed to ride up the day's three fourth category climbs to jump into the KOM jersey. Perhaps an unusual feat for a sprinter, however something which has earned Nielsen a trip to the podium in front of home crowds.
With another three points available tomorrow his jersey is not safe, however he will also get to spend a day in the lead of the classification whilst in Denmark - where he should have different ambitions and instead start focusing on the possibility of a stage win.
