Immediately after the catch was completed, the counter attacks began, with Uno-X Mobility's Tobias Johannessen getting a gap solo. The Norwegian didn't last too long however, and with 40km to go, the peloton was together again.
Still though, the attacks were relentless, with a number of riders keen to not wait for a bunched finale. Heading into the final 20km, Romain Gregoire was out ahead by just over 10 seconds. After the Frenchman was caught, Arnaud De Lie launched his first move with around 15km to go. Even the Belgian failed to get a telling gap though.
With 3.5km to go,
Marc Hirschi attacked brutally and the Swiss was still clear, by around 8 seconds as he moved through the flamme rouge and in a thrilling finale, he just about held off the peloton for victory.
