Lotto-Dstny have reportedly decided that they will opt against accepting their wildcard invitation to the 2023 Giro d'Italia. The team will instead choose to focus their resources on lesser races during the period.
Lotto-Dstny under their former guise Lotto Soudal have had a reasonable amount of success in the Italian three-week stage in recent years. Mainly thanks to the star duo of Thomas de Gendt and Caleb Ewan, the Belgian team has consistently picked up stage victories year after year at the Giro.
Despite having been relegated from the UCI World Tour at the end of the 2022 season, Lotto were automatically invited to all World Tour races this season. Het Laatste Nieuws is reporting however that alongside skipping the Giro, there will also be no Lotto-Dstny riders at other notable races including Tirreno-Adriatico and Tour of the Basque Country.
Rather than racing these, the team will be seen in lesser races such as the Four Days of Dunkirk where they believe they have a better choice to win points, helping propel them towards a potential return to World Tour level.
