UAE Team Emirates - XRG's
Jay Vine has soloed to the stage 3 win at the 2025
Tour de Romandie after a perfectly timed attack on a punchy, uphill finale to the day.
The trio of Huub Artz (Intermarché - Wanty), Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek), and Stefan Küng (Groupama - FDJ) formed the breakaway of the day, with Artz starting the day best placed on GC, starting the day 1:16 down. For much of the day, the Dutchman was in the provisional race lead too. On the Col du Mollendruz, things split up in the break, with Mollema being dropped on the early slopes, and then Artz too being dropped by a secondary attack from Kung shortly after.
As the Swiss carried on solo up ahead, by the time he reached the summit of the Col du Mollendruz, Kung still had over two minutes of a lead over the peloton with around 40km still to ride. On the descent, Kung kept the gap relatively steady, heading onto the false flat before the final climb 1:50 ahead of the bunch.
This didn't prove enough of a gap though. As Kung began to tire, the peloton were chasing hard and the gap came down drastically. As the peloton took their time with completing the catch however, Kung was allowed to dangle at around 10 seconds clear for kilometre after kilometre. With 11km to go, the Swiss was finally reeled back in by the bunch.
From there, preparation for the final rise to the line was in full swing at the front of the peloton. Inside the final 2km, Pascal Eenkhoorn took to the front with Remco Evenepoel on his wheel, signalling a potential GC fight. It was Jay Vine that made the first move though, with the Aussie soloing into the final few hundred metres. Although the sprint did come from behind, Vine had enough to hold on, sealing the stage win ahead of
Lenny Martinez and Joao Almeida.
