Jannik Steimle wins Grand Prix de Denain 2024 from the break after dramatic wipe-out of chase group behind

Jannik Steimle has taken victory at the 65th edition of Grand Prix de Denain in France this Thursday afternoon. Riding the entire race in the break, Steimle's cause when helped by a dramatic wipe-out of the chase group behind.

With five men going into the early breakaway, their advantage was considerable at one stage, around the seven-minute mark. Once the cobbles of final section of the race however, that quickly dropped. With 30km to go though, a counter-attack led by Stefan Kung and including Arnaud De Lie among others was still 3 minutes behind.

Into the final 10km and the remaining breakaway trio of Ceriel Desal, Jannik Steimle and Maxime Jarnet still held around a minute. Disaster then struck as on the final cobbled section, Kung slipped out, taking down the entire chase group with him. When Jarnet was dropped moments later, victory came down to Desal or Steimle. In the end, victory went to Steimle.
