Remco Evenepoel has put on a stunning performance at the Giro d'Italia this Saturday where he picked up the leaders' jersey. This morning he set off for stage 2 in his new colours in Teramo where he doesn't expect to have a very stressful day.
"Didn't explode, but it got quite warm. I was not able to answer everything. That was an impossible task, but it was nice to get so many messages," Evenepoel shares over the congratulations he got after a dominant performance yesterday. "The pink jersey hangs around the leader's shoulders, the pink bicycle stays away for the time being... I also keep a completely pink outfit - hopefully - for Rome."
The Belgian and Soudal - Quick-Step have been adamant on how they will most likely not mind giving away the jersey in the opening week, likely on stage 4 which goes up to Lago Laceno. There a breakaway can - as is usual in the opening mountain stage of the Giro - succeed, but stages 2 and 3 should be relatively comfortable for the Belgian to remain in pink, after putting on very large gaps to the competition on day 1.
“Today is going to be okay. It is not very technical, the final will not be too bad either. Tomorrow it will be more dangerous," the World Champion anticipates. "The party yesterday was quiet. I poured some sparkling wine for the boys. Everyone had a glass and then quickly went to bed," he revealed. Finally, she shared his opinion on the pink jersey. "It's a nice outfit and the sun is shining, so I'm going to take full advantage of it."
