The Netherlands had been expected to put in a big performance in the mixed relay team time-trial at the Glasgow World Championships. Disappointingly though, 7th place was the best they could muster, not helped by a Daan Hoole crash.
“I rode into the gates by mistake. I didn't get out very well in the corner before that, so I cut it too sharply and I couldn't hold it anymore," the 24-year-old Lidl-Trek rider lamented in his post-race interview. “It was my own fault, that sucks. I felt good, so I'm disappointed that I couldn't help the team more."
The crash was actually the only incident for Hoole on the day, with the Dutchman suffering a nosebleed right before he was about to get underway. "That played up before the start, so I had to try to stop that a bit. That was a bit annoying, but it didn't bother me," Hoole says playing it down. "I quickly put a mouth mask in my nose to stop the bleeding, that was improvisation."
"I am really disappointed, it was an unnecessary mistake," he concludes, referring back to crash. "I have some bruises. The speed was not very high, but you still crash into those gates. It will never be good, but before Friday it shouldn't be a problem. I hope to make it up to you on Friday."
