'Sticky bottle' is one of cycling's most unique terms. When a rider reaches for a bottle or a gel from the team car and then holds on to it for a few seconds, it can sometimes provide some help getting back into the rider's original group. However sometimes it is overdone, and KOM leader Lenny Martínez has absurdly pushed the boundaries this afternoon at the Col du Glandon, sparking a lot of criticism on social media.
The Bahrain - Victorious rider began stage 18 in the lead of the KOM classification and managed to get himself in the breakaway of the day at the start of the Col du Glandon. However, the Frenchman was often struggling off the back, and was eventually dropped from the group.
With 114 kilometers to go then, right in front of the TV camera, the youngster decided to use a 'sticky bottle' to try and regain contact with the group. Only he did not do it once, but a whole three times. In one of the occasions he picked up a gel and then threw it back to the team car right away.
Martínez did get back to the group much due to this 'grey area' move, and went on to win the full points at the top of the HC mountain. However, the race jury may have a big word to say at the end of the day regarding the validity of the points he has scored. You can see the video below:
