Intermarcé Circus-Wanty have revealed a hefty list of riders who are currently injured, amongst them
Biniam Girmay. The Eritrean crashed hard at the Tour of Flanders after a disappointing spring, but has now been given the green light to resume training.
"Biniam Girmay, who was involved in the same crash as Aimé (De Gendt, at the Tour of Flanders, ed.), was closely monitored in Belgium for two weeks to take care of his wounds and evaluate the state of his concussion," team doctor Ortwin Schäfer said in a press release. "After a last neurological test in the hospital of Uccle last Friday, he received our green lights to return home and continue his rehabilitation in Eritrea. On Monday he rode on the rollers for 15 minutes for the first time to start up his step by step comeback to sports."
Besides Girmay, the Belgian team also has sidelined for the time being Rui Costa, Aimé de Gendt, Rune Herregodts, Adried Petit, Hugo Page, Baptiste Planckaert and Taco van der Hoorn. Ahead of the Giro d'Italia, some riders may not be able to recover and will be force Intermarché into switching some spots in it's lineup.
Girmay has been targeting the cobbled classics this spring but has struggled to get up to speed after returning to Europe in time for the Italian classics block. He has won a stage at the Volta a Comunitat Valenciana earlier in the year but success has been limited. He now returns home before another stint in Europe later in the spring, where he is set to make his debut at the Tour de France.
