Richie Porte has recently ended a 15-year long career in the pro peloton, and is enjoying his first days of retirement. One of the most successful stage-racers of his generation, the Tasmanian has had comments on his weight recently, and his wife has publicly criticized these actions.
"I think Iv ranted about this before but I need to rant again so here we go. Richie has been officially retired for 8 days and I’m already tired of seeing/hearing comments about his weight/size," Gemma Nicole Porte, the former INEOS rider's wife, said in a twitter post.
It has hence not been a completely positive experience since hanging up the wheels for Porte. Whilst he is moving to Australia after over decade and a half living in Europe, a negative portion of comments has been sent towards his way.
"We knew the comments would come & yes we’re therefore probably hyper aware but in my opinion any comment is inappropriate, thoughtless & just f**king rude," the post continued. "Some comments are positive/congratulatory about weight gain…still not wanted. His weight shouldn’t even be a conversation."
"Richie has been an athlete for well over a decade, training every day once sometimes twice, with his weight/diet closely monitored and major sacrifices being made in other parts of life to maintain that intensity. That will obviously now change in retirement and so will he," she justified.
