It is no secret that many riders love football and closely follow the World Cup in Qatar. The love seems to be mutual, as some soccer coaches in Qatar expressed their enthusiasm for cycling.
To describe Saudi Arabia's victory against Argentina, coach Herve Renard used an analogy from cycling. "In the final, we were in a group with Van Aert, Van der Poel and Pogacar. Without looking back, we rode away from them, and in the end, we crossed the finish line first," Renard told beIN Sports.
It stems from his childhood because his hometown, Aix-les-Bains, is one of the Tour de France stops where many famous riders have won stage victories, such as Greg Lemond and Michael Boogerd. "My staff and I are cycling tourists and race fans," said Renard.
Spanish national coach Luis Enrique is also a hardcore cycling fan."My favourite rider is a compatriot: Ivan Garcia Cortina. But I also enjoy Valverde, Luis Leon Sanchez and Soler," Luis Enrique confessed during his Twitch stream.
Enrique further added, "I also like foreign riders. Remco Evenepoel, for example, who has a past as a soccer player. Or Mathieu van der Poel, it's a spectacle to see him busy on the bike. Wout van Aert, of course, is another phenomenon on the road and in the field."
