If we want to see a bunch sprint between the world's fastest riders, we are watching the wrong race. 😅 Jasper Philipsen just beat Groenewegen and Jakobsen in the small 1.1 race Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen. 🇧🇪 📹 @LRoisDuPeloton
Jasper Philipsen was one of the stars of the Tour de France earlier this year, winning four stages and taking home the Green Jersey. After his latest victory at the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen, Philipsen reflected on what has been an incredibly successful year.
“I just came back from Tenerife, where I had a good time cycling. I didn't stop. I hope to be able to take a number of more victories and end the season on a very positive note," said Philipsen immediately after defying Dylan Groenewegen and Fabio Jakobsen in a three-way photo finish. “I'm having the best season of my career. I hope to be able to continue this line. Certainly also for next year.”
On the sprint, Philipsen detailed the incredibly tight finale. “There is always a strong field of sprinters here And there are hardly any elevation meters in the course, so it almost always ends in a bunch sprint here," he analyses. “I felt that Dylan came up quickly and Fabio also did a very strong sprint. It was very close. For the same money, Dylan or Fabio wins, but I am very happy that I come out on top.”
“The team now knows what to do. I have Ramon Sinkeldam as an experienced lead-out, Jonas Rickaert was also there. They dropped me off perfectly so that I could do my sprint," the Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinter concludes. "I was in Jakobsen's wheel. It was a tailwind, so I'm happy I could win on leg speed.”
