After taking more wins than anyone else in 2023, Jasper Philipsen has already opened his account for 2024 on just his 4th race day of the season in a bunch sprint at Tirreno-Adriatico.
Last year, the Belgian also took his first win at this race and Philipsen reflected on the similarities in his post-stage interview. "Last time it was the second opportunity, this time I'm really happy that I can take a win already," he says. "It was really hectic in the final and I'm happy we could find our way to the finish line and do my sprint."
With a technical finale with plenty of pinch points and sharp corner within the last kilometre, the battle to be at the front was intense. "I felt Tim Merlier (second on the stage ed.) coming in the last corner, and I had some gearing issues, but I'm glad I could make it work!" Philipsen analyses.
"I've not worked as much on sprint," he concludes, referring to his busy Spring Classics preparation. "In general, sprinting is my talent and whilst I'm good at the Classics I have to work hard for them. But it was a good chance today and there are some more good chances coming."
