"I had a hard time with it. What I saw was not good" - Milan Vader details mental anguish after seeing Jonas Vingegaard in pain post-Itzulia Basque Country crash

Jonas Vingegaard's hopes of overall victory at the 2024 Itzulia Basque Country came to an end on Thursday as the Dane was one of a number of riders caught up in frightening crash on stage 4.

Whilst the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were forced to abandon, the Dane left the race on a stretcher, heading into the back of an ambulance with an oxygen mask. Thankfully though, Team Visma | Lease a Bike DS, Frans Maassen has confirmed to Eurosport that Vingegaard is conscious and on his way to hospital for further medical checks.

Vingegaard's Team Visma | Lease a Bike teammate, Milan Vader saw the aftermath of the incident and although he managed to finish the stage, Vader is struggling to come to terms with what he saw at the roadside.

“Fortunately I had fallen back a bit,” Vader explained to Sporza afterwards. “Maybe it was a gut feeling. Then I came to that bend and I saw everyone lying down, including Jonas. I had a hard time with it. What I saw was not good. I only thought about one thing: turning around to see how Jonas was doing. I'm glad he's conscious now.”

"Over the radio we heard that Jonas was involved in a big crash," recalled sports director Addy Engels to the team website. "We immediately saw that it didn't look good when we arrived to him. Fortunately, he was conscious. Jonas is now being examined at the hospital. We are waiting for any updates now.”
