What. A. Race! #CoppaAgostoni Well done on a fantastic performance guys! 👏 #UAETeamEmirates #WeAreUAE
For the first time in over three years, UAE Team Emirates' Davide Formolo was victorious as he soloed to the win at Coppa Agostoni after a late attack.
“I am very happy, I missed a lot the feeling of the victory," the Italian told the official website of the UAE Team Emirates post-race. "I had the task of selecting the peloton as much as I could on the Lissolo and the selection brought me in the head group with other 4 riders."
Heading into the finale, Formolo was part of a five-man lead group alongside Victor Lafay, Warren Barguil, Chris Harper and Formolo's UAE Team Emirates teammate, Marc Hirschi. With UAE having the numbers advantage, Hirschi and Formolo were able to play the right cards and ensure victory came home with the team.
"When Hirschi joined us, I focused my action on keeping a high pace in order to advantage Marc for an eventual sprint," Formolo explains. "We noticed that the opponents were controlling him, so we decided to try to exploit my freedom: I attacked on the last hill and this was the winning action.”
