World cycling continues to witness an event that could explode the WorldTour: the possible imminent merger between Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step. We now know that the Dutch outfit has officially communicated its merger plan to the UCI.
Since talks for this merger began last July, there has been speculation of all kinds. Several sources have confirmed the news to WielerFlits, which has added even more excitement to this ongoing process.
The news of the merger has been accompanied by significant changes in the leadership of the resulting team. Richard Plugge would assume the position of CEO of the team, while Merijn Zeeman would become head coach. In addition, Patrick Lefevere, currently team manager of Soudal Quick-Step, would take a seat on the merged team's supervisory board.
The latest information reveals that Richard Plugge, the head of the Jumbo-Visma team, has notified the UCI about merger plans to take place in 2024. Plugge reportedly held a meeting with UCI president David Lappartient last week. In addition, a call is scheduled to include Plugge, UCI representatives and a representative of the Soudal Quick-Step team.
So far, the content of these discussions is being kept top secret. However, it is important to note that UCI approval is an essential step for the merger to go ahead. The UCI operates under specific regulations related to the licensing of WorldTour teams, and any merger must comply with these rules.
DUE DATE.
The deadline for teams to submit all required information and documentation, including bank guarantee, exact team name, headquarters, paying agent, general manager, main sponsors, team managers and riders, is October 15. Failure to comply with this date could result in financial penalties in the form of fines, although the regulations also provide for the possibility of exceptions in special circumstances.
