After taking a pair of bunch sprint victories so far at the 2023 Vuelta a Espana, Kaden Groves was only able to finish fifth on stage 7 in a chaotic finale.
"I can't say much about this, but I'm quite disappointed," he told Eurosport immediately following the conclusion to the stage. "In the final, Robbe Ghys fell hard while he was in my wheel, so I hope he's okay. Unfortunately, I had one less teammate in the last kilometre of the race."
There were two crashes in the final 10 kilometres but Groves afterwards, was thankful that it wasn't even worse. "That boy from Caja Rural shoots into that corner without control and deviates very far to the outside. He almost causes a big crash," the Australian says referencing the Caja Rural duo of David Gonzalez and Orluis Aular.
"Because we get stuck there, I and a lot of others couldn't sprint anymore," he concludes. "I don't think it was too dangerous. We as riders take the biggest risks. Everyone wants to win and that's why sometimes there are falls."
