INEOS Grenadiers' Thymen Arensman has sadly been forced to leave the 2023 Vuelta a Espana in the worst of circumstances after a nasty crash just 5km from the line on stage 7.
With a nervous peloton preparing for the final sprint, a pinch point in the road caused an Alpecin-Deceuninck rider go down first and with no room to move it was like 10-pin bowling in the peloton. Worst affected was a top-10 finisher at last year's Vuelta a Espana, Thymen Arensman. Sadly, the 23-year-old Dutchman has now left the Grand Tour in the back of an ambulance, wearing a neck brace.
UPDATE: INEOS Grenadiers have issued a statement on the Dutchman. Luckily, major issues have been avoided, however the team do give some detail on some of the damage suffered in the crash.
"Thymen Arensman was taken by ambulance to hospital, accompanied by our team doctor, following a crash on stage 7 of La Vuelta in Oliva. He underwent trauma protocol assessment with CT scans thankfully ruling out cranial, spinal or further major injuries. Thymen has had sutures applied to the injuries he sustained, is stable and remains under observation. Please join us in wishing Thymen a speedy recovery and a swift return to full health."
