Geraint Thomas has only been able to compete in less than a week's worth of races this season, and as the Giro d'Italia draws nearer, it appears that obstacles continue to impede his progress.
Although he began his season with a rather unremarkable showing at the Tour Down Under, it wasn't long before things began to unravel for him. Despite his modest performance at the initial event, he likely had high hopes for the rest of the season. However, as events progressed, it became clear that his trajectory was heading in the wrong direction.
He withdrew from the Volta al Algarve last month due to health reasons, and now he is not participating in the Tirreno-Adriatico, which was supposed to be his first European race of the season and a major race on the calendar.
The reason for the abrupt change in his plans was not revealed by Ineos Grenadiers, who opted to describe it as a "slight modification" in broad and general terms rather than providing any specific details. There are speculations of him participating in Volta a Catalunya to make up for the missed races.
