As the race split appart with 82 kilometers to go, it was no surprise that the figure of the race leader was near the head of the peloton and taking his turns. Filippo Ganna is a crucial piece to the INEOS Grenadiers team, and today he showed the difference his presence makes in a race.
"Immediately when we started the crosswind we knew it was a critical point. In the end we did a fantastic team work, just Bodnar did some pressure for us, a really strong attack in the last eight kilometers. But yeah we take again the control and we won with Elia, tonight we can celebrate another day," Ganna said as he struggled with his English on an interview with CyclingPro.
"[Elia] For me he is more than a teammate he's like a brother and having him in the team for me, for my year, for my control it was really good, also for the important words when they were needed and yes he's amazing," he added. The duo have competed in the track for several years and the time-trial World champion's presence was key in Elia Viviani's return to the team he represented from 2015 to 2017.
Regarding the next few stages, Ganna leaves the door quite open on what can happen: "We will see you know, we hope to recover well because it's been a really hard stage, really fast, and then we think of tomorrow".
