After four successive seasons with UAE Team Emirates, Fernando Gaviria will be riding for the Movistar Team in 2023 and according to the Colombian himself a change of scenery could be just what he needs.
"The first contact was very good and I experienced the reception as very pleasant," Gaviria tells the Spanish sports newspaper AS about his new team. "I also knew a few riders personally. So that was nice. What struck me most was the family atmosphere. I really ended up with a family and they have welcomed and guided me well from day one."
At his best, Gaviria was one of the most feared sprinters in the whole of the peloton peaking with four stage wins and the points classification jersey at the 2017 Giro d'Italia. However, the last couple of years haven't been as kind to the 28-year-old with just a single victory to his name in 2020 and only two wins in 2021.
With the transfer to Movistar, Gaviria has regained his smile and he's be hoping the wins come flooding back also. "I want to ride a good Giro and book at least ten victories this year," the Colombian reveals before casting an eye towards his season opener at the Vuelta a San Juan. "It's a race that I really enjoy, that has brought me victories and that has made me feel like I belong to the top."
