The haunting figure of a doping affair looms over the Spanish peloton. A doping ring including disgraced doctor Marcos Maynar was broken up last year but it is now learnt that within Caja Rural - Seguros RGA there may have been riders as well in contact with the figure that led to the demise of Miguel Ángel López.
El País an Marca have reported this Thursday on alleged communication between Maynar and Juan Manuel Hernández, and also with the team's sprinter and Venezuelan national championship Orluis Aular who had a very strong set of results during the Vuelta. He was said to abandon the race due to illness however the report suggests that he left the race following a document sent to all teams.
It is understood that all teams at the Vuelta a Espana were sent a 23-page document with details on this case, which has now been made public. The leak of the document came from a staff member of the Spanish team that was not selected to be in the race. The team's defense - having issued a statement - talks about how this is an attempt to harm the team. The team issued a statement regarding the case this Thursday afternoon and presented a complaint to the Spanish police.
It is unknown at the time being how much connection there is between the two parties but the signs are worrying, as reportedly there is evidence of texts between Aular and Maynar - who is a figure that has been suspended from 2009 to 2019 already due to previous charges of a doping scandal, this time in the Portuguese team LA-MSS.
