It is no surprise that teams with more money can afford better riders, however the current situation is getting out of hand, according to Jens Haugland, the team manager of Uno-X, who believes restrictions need to be made so that few teams don't dominate in all races. Haugland writes more on the topic in his recent blog.
Haugland therefore sounds the alarm. "Some teams are driving the transfer market crazy. The big shifts create an asymmetric situation, because there are no limits on budgets or salaries. I hope we can find a more sustainable model for more teams, where there is more appreciation for the performance environment, team culture and details. A model where fans can connect more with teams, because it is more about identity."
"It is getting out of hand at the moment," the team manager believes. "Cycling needs fifteen to twenty teams to run well, and not five top teams that dominate everything. I am therefore in favor of budget restrictions and/or a salary cap, so that we can regulate things more. So that it guarantees predictability in the long term."
As a relatively small team, Uno-X can hardly compete against the millions of formations in the peloton. "However, we are not a small formation either. We also have something to offer," says Haugland. "It is why Søren Wærenskjold chooses to stay with us until 2026. He believes this is best for his development as a rider," Haugland refers to the offer by UAE Team Emirates the young Norwegian refused earlier this year.
