Crashes only a current talking point "because this time the star riders were also affected" according to BORA - hansgrohe's Ralph Denk

There has been much discussion over the last couple of weeks about crashes within the peloton, notably since the mass crash at Itzulia Basque Country that left Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel in a hospital bed.

According to BORA - hansgrohe boss, Ralph Denk, the fact that this time it was some of the biggest names in the sport who were injured in the crash, is the only reason people are now caring and opening discussions about how to stop the number of crashes within the peloton.

"Because this time the star riders were also affected. If they hadn't been such big names, the discussions would probably have been smaller," said Denk in conversation with sportschau.de, noting how changing things for the better won't be easy either. "There is no silver bullet that will make our sport safer."

Alongside Vingegaard and Evenepoel, BORA - hansgrohe's leader, Primoz Roglic also crashed hard, with Denk providing an update on the Slovenian. “His knee took the brunt of it, he has a bruise on it. Otherwise he has abrasions all over his body, he looked like he did after the war,” said Denk. "At the moment, only moderate indoor training is possible for him. If he gets back on the bike in the next few days, it will probably only be a small one setback. If he has to miss any longer, it will be really difficult to make up for it."
