Stage 2 of the
Tour de France Femmes has seen a victory for
Liv AlUla Jayco as
Mavi García's brave attacks led to a victory in Quimper. The Spaniard outsmarted the peloton who played too many games on the final climb and couldn't bring her back.
The second day of racing took the riders through the hilly roads of Bretagne, but overall a more difficult day than the one where Marianne Vos first took the yellow jersey. With more climbs and tricky roads on course, there was more tension in the 110-kilometer long stage from Brest to Quimper.
A strong breakaway went up the road featuring Elise Chabbey, Silke Smulders and Maud Rijnbeek. Chabbey was seeking the KOM points but naturally she was not given much space, but before they were caught defending champion Katarzyna Niewiadoma attacked with 23 kilometers to go together with Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, opening up the action in the peloton. The attacks would be reeled in, but in the back of the peloton riders like Lotte Kopecky, Elisa Longo Borghini and Elisa Balsamo would be getting dropped in the process.
The break was caught with 12 killometers to go and afterwards it was Mavi Garcia who attacked to create a meaningful gap into the final climb. The penultimate climb saw Demi Vollering hit the front but the peloton would keep a few dozen riders. Niewiadoma attacked in the bottom of the final climb and was followed by a few riders, but afterwards there was a stalemate in the group and no-one closed the gap on the Spaniard. García still had lead into the finishing straight and rode into what might be the biggest win of her career, at age 41.
Lorena Wiebes sprinted to second place and
Kim Le Court rode to third, which means she has moved into the yellow jersey.
