Bob Jungels to start Tour de France despite positive Covid-19 test

Bob Jungels recently returned to a high level, having finished sixth place at the Tour de Suisse, however a positive Covid-19 test was about to throw him out of the Tour de France... however, the story doesn't end there, as the Luxembourger will be at the start line in Copenhagen tomorrow.

The team announced this morning that Jungels underwent a test yesterday that revealed a positive result, albeit with a "slight viral load". This morning he did a second test, which the team says "confirms that he's not contagious" - however, very much confirming that Jungels is currently infected.

After the relaxing of the rules from the UCI earlier this week, it would seem possible that team and race doctors are able to provide exemptions for riders who are "not contagious". The medical management of the UCI confirmed that Jungels can start the race, however this opens a precedent for more infected riders to be inside the peloton.

AG2R Citroën Team has hence not taken to a substitute - which is said to be Greg van Avermaet. There are cases of riders who will not start the Tour despite claiming to be asymptomatic, and this opens up the possibility for other riders to race under an exception.
