Biniam Girmay's message after withdrawing from Giro d'Italia: "Soon I will be back"

Biniam Girmay abandoned the Giro d'Italia during stage 4 after crashing twice. The Intermarché-Wanty rider now issued a statement reassuring fans that he is recoverying from what was a disaster situation at the Corsa Rosa.

"Hello everyone, it's Bini. Now I'm better from the crash two days ago, thanks for everyone who sent me the best of luck and great messages," he said in a video shared by the Belgian team. "For now I'm quite ok, I just have small injuries, small wounds, but soon I will be back in the races. Thanks to everyone and see you soon."

He crashed alongside several riders in the peloton on the descent of the Colle del Melogno; and a few kilometers later when chasing back to the peloton he hit the ground once again. Despite having no fractures, it was a chaotic situation and he was forced to leave the race after the second one due to several small injuries.

This puts a big dent into the Eritrean's plan of racing the Giro-Tour double this season. Whilst he is very likely to still race the Tour de France, his schedule and plan for June will change completely as he is now out of competition after only three race days in May.
