When he came to the start line of the Giro d'Italia over two weeks ago, Andreas Leknessund had no general classification ambitions. Even when he claimed the Maglia Rosa he maintained he was not a GC contender. Now though, entering the third week in 5th he finally switches his attention to a high placing.
With stage 16 offering the first real mountain top test for the favourites in the Maglia Rosa battle, Leknessund will be able to know for sure whether or not he is a true contender to be leading the race when it reaches Rome or not following today's climbing.
Speaking prior to the race, Leknessund admits that the GC battle is now front and centre of his thinking at the Giro d'Italia. "Now sitting fifth into the last week," begins the Team DSM leader. "I was not going for GC but with the situation I am in now it would be stupid not to give it a try. I have nothing to lose but it will be interesting to see what I will do."
