The late Gino Mäder should have been leader of Tudor Pro Cycling at on-going Giro d'Italia. The Swissman was rumoured to be heading to the home PRT team for 2024, something his to-be teammate Alexander Kamp now confirms to have been a done deal.
"The team had signed with Gino Mäder. The idea was that he should have been our leader and go for GC at this Giro d'Italia," says Kamp in the latest episode of Ekstra Bladet's cycling podcast Førtertrøjen.
According to Kamp, Mäder's death caused the team to change the plan for the race. "When it happened, they chose not to go out and sign with a new leader and instead said, it's stage wins we're after."
"It is a sport where we rider at high speed, and that entails a risk. This is something you have to accept as a cyclist, because no one is forcing you to take that risk. You shouldn't be afraid, but you should be respectful about it in my opinion."
