Primoz Roglic's crash came as a shocking one at the end of a very dramatic and furious finale, and team DS Addy Engels has been asked about his view of the situation.
The attack the Slovenian put on in the final hilltop was a planned one, as team DS Addy Engels said after the end of the stage: “We had the plan to try something today. We didn't just want to go for the stage today, but the aim was also to get back in the standings". Roglic has won eight seconds on the competition, however that came with a cost; as luck would have it he came down in the final sprint with heavy consequences.
"We had television in the team car, but we missed the crash. At first we thought he had just finished in the first group, but then we heard that he had fallen in the last straight," Engels added. "A good plan then falls apart in the last hundreds of meters.” The Slovenian shortly after crossed the line, but footage after the finish line saw him stunned and with a lot of lost blood, assumed to come from injuries to an elbow.
“First we have to find out what the exact injuries are. He is battered, that is clear, but now it is important to clean all wounds. Then we can see how bad it is now," he concluded. The race's medical team reported injuries to his right elbow, hip, knee and ribs. It is a set of injuries that brings dark memories of his accidents in the last few years, and puts his Vuelta a Espana in jeopardy.
