“My children cried like I have never seen them cry before" - Emotional Michael Morkov completes set of Olympic medals at Paris 2024

Now aged 39, Michael Morkov is in his final year as a professional bike rider. The Dane is still competitive however, and in his last ever Olympic Games, Morkov has secured himself a bronze medal in the Madison alongside Niklas Larsen on the track.

“My children cried like I have never seen them cry before. I don't think they knew what grimace they should have," an emotional Morkov, who had previously taken gold at the Tokyo Olympics alongside Lasse Norman Hansen and silver in the team pursuit at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, reflected afterwards in conversation with DR1.

As a result of this bronze, Morkov has now completed the Olympic set. A very notable achievement for any sportsman. "They (his children ed.) have always wanted me to win bronze because I already have gold and silver," Morkov continues proudly. "So now I have a complete set, and I'm proud of that!"

As mentioned, this is also set to be Morkov's final year as a professional, with the Dane set to retire at the end of the current road racing season. Whilst it is not yet known when or where Morkov's final race will take place, the Dane's great friend and long time sprint companion Mark Cavendish is also in his final season, and reportedly the Brit will conclude his own legendary career at one of the post-Tour de France criteriums in Asia later this year. Potentially, Morkov too could call an end to his career at the same time as his Astana Qazaqstan Team teammate.
