Another tragedy has hit the world of cycling this Saturday. At only 18 years of age, under-23 cyclocross rider Miel Dekien has passed away following a car collision.
The news was announced by his team Ostend Air College. the Belgian youngster had been one of the most promising prospects in the discipline, achieving strong results last winter in the junior ranks including a second place in the Kortrijk Urban Cross. Last week he made his debut in the under-23 ranks at the Koppenbergcross where he finished 27th, and was set to race in Lokeren very soon.
“With great sadness and incomprehension we report the passing of our rider Miel Dekien (2006-2024) as a result of a tragic traffic accident," the team wrote. "You will always remain in our hearts Miel, we will never forget you and are grateful for the many beautiful moments together, you were and will remain a fantastic guy to us. Deepest condolences to parents, family, friends and everyone who was dear to Miel. Words fail us… wherever you are now, all the best”
