At the upcoming Cyclocross World Championships, Mathieu van der Poel is the overwhelming favourite for victory. Could his Dutch compatriot, Joris Nieuwenhuis benefit from the focus being all on his teammate however?
“That's how I see it, yes," the 27-year-old said in conversation with Wielerflits following his second-placed finish in Hoogerheide on Sunday, behind van der Poel. "I always have the feeling that this is seen very negatively and that I would not be able to drive for myself. I actually think we can benefit a lot from each other.”

Nieuwenhuis has been impressive throughout this winter's campaign, among other things becoming Dutch national champion. Could the rainbow jersey be next?
“I certainly hope that it will be a race like in Hoogerheide. There are many riders who can finish on the podium, including me," Nieuwenhuis assesses. "I hope for a good day and then I hope that I can get that second or third place."
