Thibau Nys has been having a very impressive cyclocross season with wins in Beringen, Waterloo and the Koppenbergcross to show for however he didn't find his legs at the
European Championships. Nevertheless, father and coach
Sven Nys is keen that there was no pressure for him to take the victory.
“Thibau understands that it is a challenge, especially at this age, to complete a race like the Koppenbergcross on Wednesday and to recover from it in time. It's not ideal. It could have easily worked, but that wasn't the case today. And there is no shame in that," Sven Nys told Het Laatste Nieuws.
Fatigue was known to be a factor coming into the Europeans, after many of the main figures raced the incredibly hard and muddy Koppenbercross this Wednesday. It was a day that drained a lot of energy from some of the riders, who then also had a very long trip to western France over to the Europeans. Nys was one of the big favourites but under the muddy conditions he couldn't be at the front and didn't have the legs to follow the best when the race exploded.
“The riders who did well today were men with more scratches on the bodywork. I didn't see the freshest Eli Iserbyt either. So you should not underestimate that race at the Koppenberg," Nys senior stresses however, asserting that the mid-week race made a meaningful difference for several riders. Winner Michael Vanthourenhout surely did not, as a few riders enjoyed the difficulty that the mud provided on this Sunday's race.
"Thibau came here to make the best of it. But if you feel that you just don't have the legs, then you will fail, especially at this level," he concludes. Nys ended up abandoning the race after a few laps where he could not enter the Top10. "It does make sense in itself. I never put him on a list for this European Championship. It was two very tough races in one week and then this scenario could happen.”
