Mark Cavendish is one of the stars of the Tour de France. Hence it was no surprise that he was invited to race the Saitama Criterium. Tadej Pogacar took the victory and the Manxman commented on the Slovenian after the race.
"He doesn't just win, he wins with excitement," he told reporters. "He's the idol of my little boy he's his favourite rider, he's obsessed with him. So you know when a five-year-old is excited when someone races, that's an exciting rider to watch."
Mark Cavendish recently decided to postpone his retirement from pro cycling after a roller-coaster 2023 season. Having a last-minute signing with Astana Qazaqstan Team saw him remain in the World Tour, despite struggling to get the results he hoped for at first. However at the Giro d'Italia he soared to a very popular win in Rome, and at the Tour de France he came close to beating Eddy Merckx' (and his own) record of 34 wins.
With his eyes on taking the 35th victory, after an early DNF from the race due to a crash, he has renewed with the team for one more year but this time around the Kazakh team has put on significantly more resources into the sprints and a leadout for the veteran. This includes former teammates and leadout Michael Morkov and Davide Ballerini, as well as his former coach from the Soudal - Quick-Step days where he bounced back into stardom.
