Best of the rest behind the unbeatable
Mathieu van der Poel in Hulst at the UCI
World Cup,
Baloise - Trek Lions'
Joris Nieuwenhuis continues to impress this winter.
“It took some time before I got into the race,” admitted Nieuwenhuis in his post-race interview. “But I immediately felt that I had good legs. I came to Ryan Kamp and Laurens Sweeck and saw
Pim Ronhaar and
Lars van der Haar in front of me. Then I had some doubts about whether I could close the gap. But I immediately felt that I could do it without taking Ryan under my wing. Then it was between us. At the end I tried on the hard part and I was gone.”
Although van der Poel was out of sight up ahead, Nieuwenhuis was able to overcome the challenge of his rivals to take the second spot on the podium. Although Dutch trio Nieuwenhuis, Ronhaar and van der Haar are good friends for most of the year, during the winter they do not speak much despite role as teammates.
“We already spoke before the season. Everyone what to do in a race. Especially at the end of a race, when we are together with several teammates. Then we can compete against each other," he explains. "It's everyone for themselves in such a situation, also because we are close to each other in the rankings. Suppose I'm tenth, then we can see if I can help someone. But we are quite close to each other and there are still quite a few World Cups, so that is not yet the case.”
