Thibau Nys will start his cyclocross season in Beringen (October 8). The Belgian rider will ride a busy season in the field with about 20 to 25 crosses. Nys has confirmed this to WielerFlits.
In the run-up to the cyclo-cross season, Nys will first complete the Renewi Tour, where he is currently active. He will then complete the Bretagne Classic and the European and Belgian Championships on gravel. Those last two races are the ideal preparation for the cross season, says Nys. "I can start there on my cyclocross bike and also test the tires. Perfect to get that feeling back."
The 20-year-old Belgian says that he is working towards the cross season with ambitions. "I think I was able to take another big step this summer. That gives confidence. I'm really looking forward to racing with the pros. I want to participate in the finals a number of times. That should work and that would be very nice. Then of course I am talking about crosses where Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert do not start."
"Thanks to last year's performance I have certainly received a boost. Winning crosses with the pros will still be very difficult for me, but I want to play a significant role in the cyclocross races for as long as possible."
Riding fewer cyclo-cross races than last year was not an issue. "I think it's important to keep the feeling that I'm a real crosser," explains Nys. "I want to ride a full winter, that's important to me. I have not yet doubted to ride less in the field. Over the years it might evolve to ten races, but that will only happen if it goes really well on the road and I start ticking off my goals in the field. But we are not there yet."
