"I only brought a jersey with short sleeves" - Mathieu van der Poel fights through cold weather at Koksijde

Mathieu van der Poel has noticeably travelling to cyclocross races individually in his vehicles, only then joining up with the Alpecin-Deceuninck entourage. That has led to a small mistake into yesterday's X2O Trofee Koksijde, as he took the wrong equipment by accident to the race.

“No, I only brought a jersey with short sleeves. Actually it was an accident, so I was lucky that the weather was good," van der Poel joked in words to Wielerflits. Although it wasn't too bad of a winter day, with only 10 degrees of temperature in Koksijde it was still an uncomfortable run for the World Champion.

The lack of long sleeves and further protection from the elements didn't seem to bother van der Poel who comfortably took another win, in a race where the sand was present. Van der Poel continues to build on his performances throughout the season and nothing continues to point towards him having competition at the Tabor World Championships.

He's racing Zonhoven this weekend and then return to Spain, to train and then race the Benidorm World Cup. He's not staying in Belgium and the Netherlands for the national championships that take place next week: “I had hoped to be able to do something more here, between the races. But the weather was often bad and then I chose my health, not to get sick."
