Saturday afternoon's UCI World Cup race in Hulst is one that will be remembered for a long time. With seemingly a dramatic incident every minute, you could not take your eyes off the race.
One such incident of controversy came when Wout van Aert crashed early on, taking him out of race-winning contention in the early stages. Although it wasn't quite clear how the crash came about at the time, it seems the Belgian believes Pim Ronhaar was to blame.
“I was in Mathieu's wheel, at a point of the course with many right-angle turns. Wout came to wiggle and I sat in front of him. I had the inside bend, he had the outside bend and there is only one track there. Apparently, I pushed him into the barriers,” recapped Ronhaar in his post-race interview.
“I just spoke to him after the finish and he wasn't very happy. I understand that of course, but I think he would have done the same to me," continues the Baloise - Trek Lions rider. "I will speak to him again in Baal to say sorry. But I certainly didn't mean to push him away from there. I just kept my place and he would have done the same.”
